Are you the next Face of Freedom?
THE FINAL
Sunday 29th November 2009
Month’s in the planning the competition organised by local fundraiser Arlene Fenton, hairdresser Irving Miskell-Reid, Mary Forbes along with the team from Freedom Hair Experience and make-up artist Kezia McKinnon, have cut down the hundreds of applicants to a final 16 ahead of this month’s final.
Over the past weeks the trio, along with a team of industry experts, have scoured the city’s universities, colleges, shops and bars on the hunt for a new model with the top prize of a contract with Superior Model Management up for grabs.
Other prizes include professional photographs to kick-start an industry standard portfolio, £500 first prize and two runners up prizes of £50.
The Face of Freedom organisers have drafted in a crack judging panel including award-winning Fife hairdresser Dom Migele, former model Petra Drummond, stylist Leigh Ferguson and professional make-up artist Karen Bowen.
Petra modelled for 15 years, starting her career here at Fat Sam’s when she won a Hawaii-themed competition, aged 17. At 18 she won a modelling competition in Glasgow and then went on to clinch a national prize at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Her subsequent career as a model took her all over the world.
Petra said, “I was modelling all over the place for 15 years until I started studying at the Chelsea college for a textiles degree.”
As one of Britain’s first deaf models Petra has gone on to work as a support worker for deaf people with mental health problems and with deaf children with behavioural difficulties. She has now returned to Dundee and is looking forward to judging the competition that hopes to bring some catwalk glamour to the East Coast.
Hundreds of hopefuls had their photos taken for consideration last month at the Overgate’s student party with scores more putting themselves forward during fresher’s week.
After an initial judging phase, the team cut down the number of model contestants at Fat Sam’s, where Face of Freedom were involved with an evening of entertainment and live judging. The Judges were looking for strong individuals who epitomise current trends in the industry. Those put forward for the final in Fat Sam’s Sunday 29 November must have the potential to work in commercial, editorial and catwalk modelling. They will be judged on their walk, style, composure and individuality.
Entertainment was provided by DJ Kit Clarke.
However the competition is about more than just discovering a fresh new king or queen of the catwalk. All funds from ticket sales will be donated to the Maggie’s Centre, Dundee. Arlene herself is a cancer patient and since her breast cancer diagnosis in 2004 she has raised thousand for Breast Cancer Care, MacMillan Day Centre and the Maggie’s Centre Dundee.
Arlene said, “At the time of my diagnosis I was angry. I thought I was going to die. The way I see it now though is every day they are researching and getting more options.
“When I raise that money I’m raising it for the next woman who is diagnosed. They all need money. It’s happened to too many of us.”
Arlene and ten fellow cancer patients will take to the catwalk alongside the finalists in November modelling a range of casual and formal wear.
The final on 29th November will feature entertainment from two local dance troops alongside the finalists modelling ranges donated by the Overgate.
Tickets for the final on Sunday 29th November are £10.
